Heterotrophic soil microorganisms are responsible for ~50% of the carbon dioxide released by respiration from the terrestrial biosphere each year. The respiratory response of soil microbial communities to warming, and the control mechanisms, remains uncertain, yet is critical to understanding the future land carbon (C)-climate feedback. Individuals of nine species of fungi decomposing wood were exposed to 90 days of cooling to evaluate the medium-term effect of temperature on respiration. Overall, the effect of temperature on respiration increased in the medium term, with no evidence of compensation. However, the increasing effect of temperature on respiration was lost after correcting for changes in biomass. These results indicate that C loss through respiration of wood-decomposing fungi will increase beyond the direct effects of temperature on respiration, potentially promoting greater C losses from terrestrial ecosystems and a positive feedback to climate change.

It is controversial how useful bioassays are for identifying the in vivo toxicity of hazardous environmental exposures. In this study, fruiting bodies of forest mushrooms (n = 46), indoor mold colonies (n = 412), fungal secondary metabolites (n = 18), xenobiotic chemicals such as biocides and detergents (n = 6), and methanol extracts of indoor dusts from urban buildings (n = 26) were screened with two different bioactivity assays: boar sperm motility inhibition (BSMI) and inhibition of cell proliferation (ICP) tests. For the forest mushrooms, the toxicity testing result was positive for 100% of poisonous-classified species, 69% of non-edible-classified species, and 18% of edible-classified species. Colonies of 21 isolates of Ascomycota mold fungal species previously isolated from water-damaged buildings proved to be toxic in the tests. Out of the fungal metabolites and xenobiotic chemicals, 94% and 100% were toxic, respectively. Out of the indoor dusts from moldy-classified houses (n = 12) and from dry, mold-free houses (n = 14), 50% and 57% were toxic, respectively. The bioassay tests, however, could not differentiate the samples from indoor dusts of moldy-classified buildings from those from the mold-free buildings. Xenobiotic chemicals and indoor dusts were more toxic in the BSMI assay than in the ICP assay, whereas the opposite results were obtained with the Ascomycota mold colonies and fungal secondary metabolites. The tests recognized unknown methanol-soluble thermoresistant substances in indoor settled dusts. Toxic indoor dusts may indicate a harmful exposure, regardless of whether the toxicity is due to xenobiotic chemicals or microbial metabolites.

Cheese is one of the most common dairy products and is characterized by its complex aroma. However, in times of climate change and resource scarcity, the possibility to mimic the characteristic cheese-like aroma from plant-based sources is in demand to offer alternatives to cheese. Accordingly, the production of a natural cheese-like aroma via fermentation of four plant-based proteins and coconut oil with basidiomycetes has been addressed. Mixtures of soy and sunflower protein with coconut oil (15 g/L) have shown the formation of a cheese-like aroma after 72 and 56 h after fermentation with Cyclocybe aegerita and Trametes versicolor, respectively. Isovaleric acid, butanoic acid, ethyl butanoate, 1-octen-3-ol, and various ketones were identified as the key odorants. Similarities to typical cheeses were observed by the principal component analysis. Overall, the finding offered an approach to a sustainable production of a natural cheese-like aroma from a plant source, thus contributing to the development of cheese alternatives.

Substituted benzaldehydes are the most commonly used natural-occurring flavours in the world. The consumer's preference for 'natural or organic' aromas has increased the request for flavours possessing the 'natural' status. The resulting shortage of aromatic aldehydes of extractive origin, such as vanillin, veratraldehyde and piperonal, can be offset by developing a new biotechnological synthesis method. Here, we report a study on the microbiological reduction of five natural benzoic acid derivatives, namely p-anisic, vanillic, veratric, piperonylic and eudesmic acids, to produce the corresponding fragrant aldehydes. We found that different Basidiomycota strains can efficiently perform this transformation, with good chemical selectivity and tolerance to the toxicity of substrates and products. Besides confirming the carboxylic acid reductase activity of the already studied fungi Pycnoporus cinnabarinus, we discovered that other species such as Pleurotus eryngii, Pleurotus sapidus and Laetiporus sulphureus as well as the non-ligninolytic fungi Lepista nuda are valuable microorganisms for the synthesis of anisaldehyde, vanillin, veratraldehyde, piperonal and 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde from the corresponding acids. According to our findings, we propose a reliable process for the preparation of the above-mentioned aldehydes, in natural form. KEY POINTS: • Fragrant benzaldehydes were obtained by biotransformation. • Basidiomycota strains reduced substituted benzoic acid to the corresponding aldehydes. • Anisaldehyde, vanillin, veratraldehyde, piperonal and 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde were prepared in natural form.

The emergence of antibiotic resistance in pathogens is one of the major health concerns facing mankind as different bacterial strains have developed resistance to antibiotics over the period of time due to overuse and misuse of antibiotics. Besides this, ability to form biofilms is another major factor contributing to antibiotic resistance, which has necessitated the need for exploration for novel and effective compounds with ability to inhibit biofilm formation. Endophytic fungi are reported to exhibit antibacterial and anti-biofilm potential and could serve as a potent source of novel antibacterial compounds. Majority of the bioactivities have been reported from fungi belonging to phylum Ascomycota. Endophytic basidiomycetes, inspite of their profound ability to serve as a source of bioactive compounds have not been exploited extensively. In present study, an attempt was made to assess the antibacterial, anti-biofilm and biofilm dispersion potential of an endophytic basidiomycetous fungus Schizophyllum commune procured from the culture collection of our lab. Ethyl acetate extract of S. commune showed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica and Vibrio cholerae. Minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of the extract were in the range of 1.25-10 mg/ml against the tested bacterial pathogens. The mode of action was determined to be bactericidal which was further confirmed by time kill studies. Good anti-biofilm activity of S. commune extract was recorded against K. pneumoniae and S. enterica, which was further validated by fluorescence microscopy. The present study highlights the importance of endophytic basidiomycetes as source of therapeutic compounds.

Abstract In advanced biotechnology, the utilization of enzymes to achieve new or modified compounds with antibacterial, fungicidal, and anti-cancer specifications is crucial. Mushroom lactases are a hopeful biocatalyst for the synthesis and modification of different compounds. They are an accessible and inexpensive enzyme for the preparation of reaction objects and have recently received attention. Laccase purification was performed from basidiomycete Lentinus strigosus (LS) in several stages: Stage 1. On ion-exchange chromatography on TEAE Servacell 23 (400 ml), two distinctly separated laccase activity peaks were observed, eluted from the carrier at 0.21 and 0.27 M NaCl. In order to reduce the loss of enzymes, all fractions with laccase activity were collected, concentrated, and desalted using an ultrafiltration cell (Amicon, United States) with a UM-10 membrane. Stage 2. The resulting preparation with laccase activity was applied to a Q-Sepharose column (60 ml). Two well-separated peaks with laccase activity were obtained during the elution: laccase I (0.12 M NaCl) and laccase II (0.2 M NaCl). Stage 3. In the course of further purification of both enzymes, carried out on anion-exchange carrier Resource Q (6 ml), a broken gradient was used: 0 - 10%, 10 - 20%, and 20 - 100% with 1M NaCl. Stage 4. Both laccase I and laccase II, obtained after Resource Q, were desalted, concentrated to 1 ml each, and applied to a Superdex 75 gel filtration column. As a result, two laccases were obtained in a homogeneous form.

Lactases de cogumelos são biocatalisadores promissores para síntese e modificação de diferentes compostos, por serem enzimas baratas e disponíveis para a preparação de componentes de reação, e vem recebendo a devida atenção recentemente. A purificação da lacase foi realizada a partir do basidiomiceto Lentinus strigosus em vários estágios: Etapa 1 - na cromatografia de troca iônica em TEAE Servacell 23 (400 ml), foram observados dois picos de atividade da lacase distintamente separados, com eluição do transportador a 0,21 e 0,27 M de NaCl. Para reduzir a perda de enzimas, todas as frações com atividade de lacase foram coletadas, concentradas e dessalinizadas em uma célula de ultrafiltração (Amicon, Estados Unidos) com membrana UM-10; Etapa 2 - a preparação resultante com atividade de lacase foi aplicada a uma coluna Q-Sepharose (60 ml). Durante a eluição, foram obtidos dois picos bem separados com atividade de lacase: lacase I (NaCl 0,12 M) e lacase II (NaCl 0,2 M); Etapa 3 - no decurso da purificação adicional de ambas as enzimas, realizada no Recurso Q de transportador de troca aniônica (6 ml), um gradiente quebrado foi usado: 0-10%, 10-20% e 20-100% com NaCl 1M; Etapa 4 - tanto a lacase I como a lacase II, obtidas após o Recurso Q, foram dessalinizadas e concentradas para 1 ml cada e aplicadas a uma coluna de filtração em gel Superdex 75. Wood decomposing ascomycetes and basidiomycetes group of fungi are the most valuable microbes on the earth's ecosystem that recycles the source of carbon; therefore, they are essential for the biorefinery industries. To understand the robustness of the enzymes and their metabolic pathways in the fungal system, label-free quantification of the total proteins was performed. The fungi showed a comparable quantity of protein abundance [Trichoderma citrinoviride (285), Thermoascus aurantiacus (206), Ganoderma lucidum MDU-7 (102), G. lucidum (242)]. Differentially regulated proteins of ascomycetes and basidiomycetes were analyzed, and their heatmap shows upregulated and downregulated proteins [25 differentially expressed proteins in T. citrinoviride (8.62 % up-regulated and 91.37 % down-regulated) and G. lucidum (5.74 % up-regulated and 94.25 % down-regulated)] by using the normalized peptide-spectrum match (PSMs) and log2fold change. These proteins were similarly matched to the carbohydrate active enzymes family (CAZymes) like glycoside hydrolase (GH family), carbohydrate-binding module (CBM family) with auxiliary activities, and also involved in the hydrolysis of carbohydrate, lignin, xylan, polysaccharides, peptides, and oxido-reductase activity that helps in antioxidant defense mechanism. The lignocellulolytic enzymes from two different divisions of fungi and proteomics studies gave a better understanding of carbon recycling and multi-product lignocellulosic biorefinery processes.

Background The clinical significance of the filamentous basidiomycetes isolated from clinical samples is not always clear. Thus, these fungi have been considered environmental contaminants traditionally. Aims To review those clinical cases in which filamentous basidiomycetes from respiratory samples had been isolated. Methods The retrospective study was carried out in a single tertiary care hospital. We recovered all culture-confirmed isolations of filamentous basidiomycetes from respiratory samples (bronchial aspirate [BAS], bronchoalveolar lavage [BAL] and sputum) analyzed between the years 2020 and 2023. Isolates were identified by ITS region sequencing. Results In six patients a filamentous basidiomycete had been isolated from a respiratory sample. The species identified were all different: Fomitopsis sp. (BAS), Trametes ljubarskyi (BAL), Stereum gausapatum (BAS), Porostereum spadiaceum (BAS), Phlebia subserialis (sputum) and Inonotus levis (BAL). All the patients were immunosuppressed or had an underlying disease with pulmonary involvement. None of them received any specific antifungal treatment (in relation with the fungus isolated) and all six improved clinically and were discharged. Conclusions The isolation of filamentous basidiomycetes in these patients had uncertain clinical significance. However, the isolation of any filamentous basidiomycete in respiratory samples from immunosuppressed patients or patients with chronic pulmonary disease is an emerging situation that should be carefully assessed in the context of chronic allergic episodes or suspicion of invasive fungal infections. Antecedentes La importancia clínica de los basidiomicetos filamentosos procedentes de muestras clínicas no siempre es clara. Por ello, estos hongos se han considerado tradicionalmente como contaminantes ambientales. Objetivos Describir las características de los pacientes con aislamientos de basidiomicetos filamentosos en muestras respiratorias para intentar aclarar el significado clínico de estos hallazgos. Métodos Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo en nuestro hospital de tercer nivel; fueron incluidos pacientes con el aislamiento de un basidiomiceto filamentoso confirmado en cultivo a partir de una muestra respiratoria (aspirados bronquiales [BAS], lavados broncoalveolares [BAL] y esputos) procesadas entre los años 2020 y 2023. Realizamos la identificación molecular del aislamiento mediante la secuenciación de la región ITS. Resultados En seis pacientes se obtuvo un aislamiento de basidiomiceto filamentoso de una muestra respiratoria, y los seis aislamientos pertenecían a diferentes géneros: Fomitopsis sp. (BAS), Trametes ljubarskyi (BAL), Stereum gausapatum (BAS), Porostereum spadiaceum (BAS), Phlebia subserialis (esputo) e Inonotus levis (BAL). Todos los pacientes sufrían inmunosupresión o alguna enfermedad de base con afectación pulmonar. Ninguno de ellos recibió tratamiento antifúngico específico (en relación con el aislamiento recuperado de la muestra) y finalmente fueron dados de alta tras la mejoría clínica. Conclusiones Los aislamientos de basidiomicetos filamentosos en nuestros pacientes tuvieron un significado clínico incierto. Sin embargo, en los pacientes inmunodeprimidos o con enfermedades pulmonares crónicas, el aislamiento de un basidiomiceto filamentoso en el tracto respiratorio inferior representa una situación emergente que debe evaluarse cuidadosamente en el contexto de un episodio alérgico crónico o ante la sospecha de una infección fúngica invasiva. The mitochondrial genome of the brown rot fungus Fomitopsis pinicola isolate FBCC 1181 is a 66.5 kbp circular chromosome. It contains 64 predicted genes, including a set typical for Basidiomycota Agaricomycetes mitogenomes. Introns of cox and cob genes contain several homing endonucleases of both LAGLIDADG and GIY-YIG types.

INTRODUCTION: The genus Omphalotus, in particular the "Jack-O'Lantern mushrooms" Omphalotus illudens and Omphalotus olearius, are famous for the production of the DNA-alkylating illudins. A lesser-known species, Omphalotus mexicanus, native to Central America, also produces cytotoxic illudins S and M, but its minor secondary metabolites are yet to be investigated. OBJECTIVE: To identify, isolate, and elucidate the structure of novel secondary metabolites of the illudin family in mycelial extracts of O. mexicanus from submerse cultivation. METHODOLOGY: A fermentation of the fungus in 15 L stirred tank bioreactors is described. Mycelial extracts were separated using a combination of flash chromatography with preparative RP-C18 high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Analysis of metabolites was done using an ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet diode array detector (UPLC-UV-DAD) system coupled to an electrospray ionisation quadrupole time-of-flight (ESI-QTOF) mass spectrometer. Structures were elucidated using one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) techniques followed by comparison of experimental and simulated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra to determine absolute configurations. RESULTS: Two novel illudin derivatives, for which we propose the names omphaderol (1) and illudaneol B (2), as well as illudaneol (3) and the unusual cyclobutylcyclopentane illudosin (4), were isolated from the mycelia and characterised. CONCLUSION: Particularly the illudaneol derivatives with their high titers may be potential building blocks for an alternative semisynthetic route to new illudin derivatives with improved medical properties. Additionally, the findings improve the knowledge of minor illudin compounds in the mycelial extract of this fungus and may be of significance for future biosynthetic studies of the illudins.

The edible oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the most cultivated species worldwide. Morphogenesis associated with the maturation of fruit bodies is controlled by two unlinked loci of sexual compatibility matA and matB with multiple alleles (tetrapolar system of sexual compatibility). Quantitative analysis of the alleles of mating compatibility loci in 17 natural isolates collected in the Moscow region was performed in mon-mon (monokaryons-monokaryon) and di-mon (dikaryon-monokaryon) crossings. Four monokaryotic testers strains which were heteroallelic at both mating type loci were obtained for each of the five natural mushroom isolates by using original technique of sterile spore prints on Petri dishes and mon-mon crossing. Twelve natural isolates were crossed via di-mon mating with the four monokaryotic testers M-38. Genetic analysis of the alleles of sexual compatibility loci in 17 natural isolates revealed multiple alleles at both loci: at least ten alleles at matA locus and eight alleles at matB locus. Structural organization analysis of the matA locus was performed in silico for homokaryotic strains PC9 and PC15 based on the whole-genome sequencing data available at DOE Joint Genome Institute. The matA locus has an extremely divergent structure: there are one copy of the homeodomain gene hd1 and one copy of the hd2 gene in the PC9 strain, whereas the matA locus of the PC15 strain is composed by two copies of hd1.1 and hd1.2 genes (class HD1 homeodomain proteins) and one copy of hd2 gene (class HD2 proteins). Comprehensive analysis of amino acid sequences of HD1 and HD2 homeodomain proteins demonstrated that the proteins have a globular structure with the nuclear localization and contain a variable N-terminus and a more conserved DNA-binding domain with a specific conserved motif  WFXNXR in the third ɑ-helix. The results suggest that multiple alleles of the matA locus of sexual compatibility in basidiomycete fungi is achieved due to both different copy number of the coding hd genes within the locus and the variability of the coding gene sequences.

This study investigates the mycelial biomass production and chitosan extraction potential of various Basidiomycota strains, including Heterobasidion annosum, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Pleurotus ostreatus, Trametes versicolor, and Lentinus lepideus. Both submerged fermentation (SF) and solid-state fermentation (SSF) methods were employed. The chitosan yield in basidiocarps of Pleurotus ostreatus, Agaricus bisporus, and Ganoderma applanatum was also evaluated as a reference material. The chitosan extracted from fungal cells was characterized using elemental analyses and FTIR spectroscopy. Among the cultivated strains, P. chrysosporium exhibited the highest mycelial biomass concentration in SF (1.03 g 100 mL-1) after 14 days, while T. versicolor achieved the highest biomass concentration in SSF (3.65 g 100 mL-1). The highest chitosan yield was obtained from the mycelium of P. chrysosporium (0.38%) and T. versicolor (0.37%) in shaken SF. Additionally, commercially cultivated A. bisporus demonstrated the highest chitosan yield in fungal fruiting bodies (1.7%). Filamentous basidiomycetes are an emerging cause of human infection in tropical and subtropical regions. We report a case of subcutaneous infection caused by the shelf fungus, Megasporoporia setulosa, in an immunocompetent male. This is also the first report of human infection caused by this filamentous basidiomycete. Identification of the fungus could only be achieved by sequencing the ITS and LSU regions of rDNA. The patient recovered following surgery and treatment with amphotericin B and oral itraconazole. This report underscores the cross-kingdom pathogenicity of plant fungi and the importance of molecular tools for definitive identification of nonsporulating fungal species.

Interest in edible and medicinal macrofungi is millennial in terms of their uses in health and food products in Central Asia, while interest in inedible and medicinal macrofungi has grown in popularity in recent years. Edible and inedible medicinal basidiomycetes were collected during field surveys from different regions of Uzbekistan. The morphological characters and similarity assessment of rDNA-Internal Transcribed Spacer sequence data were used to measure diversity and habitat associations. A number of 17 species of medicinal macrofungi of ethnomycological and medicinal interest was found associated with 23 species of trees and shrubs belonging to 11 families and 14 genera. Polyporaceae and Hymenochaetaceae were represented by the highest number of species followed by Ganodermataceae, Fomitopsidaceae, Auriculariaceae, Cerrenaceae, Grifolaceae, Phanerochaetaceae, Laetiporaceae, Schizophyllaceae, and Stereaceae. The highest number of medicinal basidiomycete species was reported in the following host genera: Acer, Betula, Celtis, Crataegus, Juglans, Juniperus, Lonicera, Malus, Morus, Platanus, Populus, Prunus, Quercus, and Salix. An updated list of edible and inedible medicinal mushrooms identified in Uzbekistan, their morphological characteristics, and phylogenetic placement are given for the first time. Information is provided on their uses in traditional and modern medicine. Their bioactive compounds and extracts can be applied as medicines, as well as food and cosmetic ingredients.

Mycelium-based materials have attracted growing interest, facilitating their development for various new applications. Finding for suitable fungal species and strains enables further technical breakthroughs in their development and quality control. Here, we developed a model solid-state culture system to screen fungal strains efficiently for mycelium-based materials production. A piece of silicone-coated paper set on the general agar plate allows for isolation of the mycelial mat from the substrate. The mycelial growth and density can be evaluated by weighing the mycelial mat. We used the paper substrate after fungal incubation to investigate the relationship between substrate degradation and the contact time with hyphae. It yielded further insights into the fungal decay. Ten basidiomycetes were assessed for their fungal growth and degradation behaviour of the substrate using this method. Pleurotus floridanus FBCC375 showed a dense and elastic mycelial mat and mild degradation of the substrate. A unique decay behaviour was found in Hypsizygus ulmarius FBCC573 and Trametes versicolor FBCC564. They indicated a positional imbalance in the decay activity within the colony. This simple method is helpful for screening fungal strains and facilitates the further development of mycelium-based materials.

Agaricus subrufescens, also known as the "sun mushroom," has significant nutritional and medicinal value. However, its short shelf life due to the browning process results in post-harvest losses unless it's quickly dehydrated. This restricts its availability to consumers in the form of capsules. A genome sequence of A. subrufescens may lead to new cultivation alternatives or the application of gene editing strategies to delay the browning process. We assembled a chromosome-scale genome using a hybrid approach combining Illumina and Nanopore sequencing. The genome was assembled into 13 chromosomes and 31 unplaced scaffolds, totaling 44.5 Mb with 96.5% completeness and 47.24% GC content. 14,332 protein-coding genes were identified, with 64.6% of the genome covered by genes and 23.41% transposable elements. The mitogenome was circularized and encoded fourteen typical mitochondrial genes. Four polyphenol oxidase (PPO) genes and the Mating-type locus were identified. Phylogenomic analysis supports the placement of A. subrufescens in the Agaricomycetes clade. This is the first available genome sequence of a strain of the "sun mushroom." Results are available through a Genome Browser (https://plantgenomics.ncc.unesp.br/gen.php?id=Asub) and can support further fungal biological and genomic studies.

One of the main reasons for consumer rejection of plant-based meat alternatives is the lack of meaty flavor after cooking. In this study, a platform was developed to generate meaty flavors solely from Allium substrates (chives, leeks, ramsons, and onions) using basidiomycete-mediated submerged fermentations. Polyporus umbellatus-mediated fermentation of onions resulted in an intense meaty and liver sausage-like flavor under proper fermentation parameters. Using multisolvent and solvent-free aroma extractions coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry, 5 odorants with high assigned flavor dilution (FD) factors (≥ 256) were identified in the fermented sample that have been reported in the literature as important aroma compounds of meat products: methyl palmitate, bis(2-methyl-furyl) disulfide, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, γ-nonalactone, and eugenol. Using selected ion monitoring, the presence of bis(2-methyl-furyl) disulfide (meaty, savory, FD 256) after fermentation was confirmed. It was proposed that P. umbellatus enzymatically forms bis(2-methyl-furyl) disulfide from intermediates derived from the thermal degradation of thiamine.

The fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa secretes protein effectors that manipulate the physiology of the host plant, but few effectors of this fungus have had their functions confirmed. We performed functional characterization of a promising candidate effector of M. perniciosa. The inoculation of rBASIDIN at 4 µmol L-1 in the mesophyll of leaflets of Solanum lycopersicum caused symptoms of shriveling within 6 h without the presence of necrosis. However, when sprayed on the plant at a concentration of 11 µmol L-1, it caused wilting symptoms only 2 h after application, followed by necrosis and cell death at 48 h. rBASIDIN applied to Theobroma cacao leaves at the same concentration caused milder symptoms. rBASIDIN caused hydrogen peroxide production in leaf tissue, damaging the leaf membrane and negatively affecting the photosynthetic rate of Solanum lycopersicum plants. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that BASIDIN has orthologs in other phytopathogenic basidiomycetes. Analysis of the transcripts revealed that BASIDIN and its orthologs are expressed in different fungal species, suggesting that this protein is differentially regulated in these basidiomycetes. Therefore, the results of applying BASIDIN allow the inference that it is an effector of the fungus M. perniciosa, with a strong potential to interfere in the defense system of the host plant.

Basidiomycetes are renowned as highly effective decomposers of plant materials, due to their extensive array of oxidative enzymes, which enable them to efficiently break down complex lignocellulosic biomass structures. Among the oxidative machinery of industrially relevant basidiomycetes, the role of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMO) in lignocellulosic biomass deconstruction is highlighted. So far, only a limited number of basidiomycetes LPMOs have been identified and heterologously expressed. These LPMOs have presented activity on cellulose and hemicellulose, as well as participation in the deconstruction of lignin. Expanding on this, the current review proposes both enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms of LPMOs for biomass conversion, considering the significance of the Carbohydrate-Binding Modules and other C-terminal regions domains associated with their structure, which is involved in the deconstruction of lignocellulosic biomass.
